Futon Covers – Cotton Or Synthetic?
The internet and shops are full of futon covers, but how do you decide which to buy? There are two basic criteria which you need to consider before parting with your money; color and texture.
The texture and feel of your futon cover is defined by the fabric is it made from. If you are going for a cover which is 100% cotton then you need to get one which is as thick as possible. The thinner covers may seem softer, but they will ‘give’ a bit and will wrinkle – which doesn’t look good. To get the cotton covers to look good and be durable you want the cotton to be almost as thick as a traditional upholstery fabric. These can be found, but they are obviously the most expensive ones.
If you want to get a soft feel, you really need to consider the synthetic options. These hold their shape well as they will have an elastane type component, and can be soft like suede.
The next thing to consider is the color. The synthetics seem to look better in the lighter colors. It is hard to define exactly why; the only way I can think to explain this is that with the dark colors there seems to be a slight sheen or shine in some lights which reduce’s the association of soft and comfortable. However, I have not noticed this with the lighter shades such as tan, taupe, beige, cream or any of the more neutral tones.
If you are looking for a the very deep reds, blues or greens I would definitely suggest a thick cotton cover. I would however, advise against getting a black. These look great in the shop, but one of the attractions of futon covers is that they are easy to wash, and nothing looks less appealing than a washed out black. So unless you are not going to be washing your cover too often or you are prepared to replace it frequently I would go for a very dark color rather than black.
Once you have chosen your material and color you are just left with buying the right size. This may sound easy; but it is also easy to get it wrong. One thing to bear in mind is that not all futon mattresses are the same thickness. If you get a cover which is too large you will find that it wrinkles and it will constantly irritate you. You want to get as tight a fit as possible, so if you have a 7” mattress and have a choice between a cover which is up to 8” or up to 9”, go for the one closest to your actually mattress size; in this case the 8”.
